Dear Readers,
Radhekrishna!
We have seen the reference of the word Om in many Hindu scriptures in our previous posts. In this post let us know the deep meanings associated with the sacred syllable which makes it so sacred.
All auspicious actions begin with Om. It is even used as a greeting - Om, Hari Om etc. It is repeated as a mantra or meditated upon. Its form is worshipped, contemplated upon or used as an auspicious sign.
OM is considered to be the ‘primordial sound’. Even before the material creation came into existence there was only the natural humming energy which resembled the sound of OM. Today, we know that one form of energy can be converted to another form – electricity to sound, electricity to heat, heat to electricity etc. According to the famous equation by Einstein – E=mc2, all matter is nothing but waves of energy. So, when the ‘powers that be’ decided to create this material universe, they were able to use the ever-present humming sound vibration of OM to manifest this creation. This same vibration continues to exist all around us and even inside us. The inner sound is given the name "antar-naada" (the inner sound) which can be heard when we can tune in to our pure inner self.
Om is the universal name of the Lord. It is made up of the letters A (phonetically as in "around"), U (phonetically as in "put") and M (phonetically as in "mum"). The sound emerging from the vocal chords starts from the base of the throat as "A". With the coming together of the lips, "U" is formed and when the lips are closed, all sounds end in "M".
These three letters that make up the word AUM symbolize something. To know what is that something wait for the next post!

- It’s a herb with bluish green and bluish red flowers
- It’s a tonic for the heart and the brain
- It also purifies the blood
- It checks the progress of the cataract
That concludes the topic for the fortnight. Till the next post, Radhekrishna!
